World Heritage Day is celebrated around the world on the 18th of April. This day helps to raise public awareness about Australia’s beautiful World Heritage sites and highlights the importance of protecting these vulnerable sites. The Department of Environment, Heritage and the Arts, wanted to raise school children's awareness of Australia's World Heritage listed sites.
To build Australian school children's awareness of Australia’s World Heritage listed sites through a national schools competition.
A student competition was developed which asked school students to build a website which profiles Australia’s World Heritage sites. School kids were asked to learn about the sites and then in their own words tell their peers what is special about these places. Graphic design and fun creative for each site was designed to add appeal and excitement to the activity. Engagement and development of the site raised awareness of Australia’s seventeen World Heritage sites and developed heritage values within young people.
Willett Marketing brokered a partnership with Microsoft who developed specific templates for the competition on their DreamSpark web builder program which is available free to schools. Education resources and classroom collateral were developed to bring the sites to life and to assist teachers.
